More than a Half Century of Service. A Lifetime of Dedication to Farmers.
Our Roots Run Deep
Roland L. Geyer began farming in Sac County in 1940. He and his wife, Dorothy Mae, first farmed near Odebolt then purchased a farm south of Early in 1950. Roland’s interests included not only raising crops but Spotted Poland China hogs, Guernsey dairy cows, and Palomino quarter horses.
While his farm enterprise kept him busy, Roland found time to work part-time for USDA/ASCS from 1954 to 1957. This sideline gave way to Roland becoming a federal crop insurance agent in 1958, one of only five in Iowa, and the beginning of The Roland L. Geyer Agency. Crop-hail insurance was added to the mix in the 1970s.
Of the five original Iowa crop insurance agents, three are still in business today. Only the Roland L. Geyer Agency is still owned by the same family with the same commitment to providing the expertise needed to help farmers protect their livelihoods.
Roland served as chairman of the Iowa Agents Association from 1975 to 1981. He was a charter member of the National Agent Association, organized in 1977 and was appointed treasurer of this association. In 1981, Roland helped organize the National Association of Crop Insurance Agents (NACIA). He also served as a past treasurer of the NACIA.
We Focus on Crop Insurance
The Roland L. Geyer Agency specializes in crop insurance. Since its inception, the agency’s sole mission has been serving farmers with the right crop insurance coverage and providing outstanding customer service. Roland’s son, Tod, and friend, Phil Fanning, joined him as partners in the agency in 1985 and 1984 respectively.
Tod and Phil maintain the Agency’s tradition of outstanding service. They choose to offer only crop insurance products because it allows them to focus on the increasing complexity of the policies and their customers’ needs.
When crop insurance was new, there was one program with three different levels of coverage. Today, there are multiple plans, multiple levels of coverage, as well as livestock policies. The Roland L. Geyer Agency keeps up to date with continuing education and dedication to understanding the coverage that best suits farmers in this region.
With more than 60 years of service, friendship, and expertise as the foundation, the Roland L. Geyer Agency will continue to grow and thrive into the future for the next generations of farmers in northwest Iowa.
Our Team

Tod A. Geyer
Tod brings decades of experience, industry knowledge, and a commitment to serving farmers to his work in crop insurance. Son of Roland L. Geyer Agency founder and namesake, Tod takes great pride in maintaining the level of service and expertise his father established in 1958.
After graduating from Buena Vista College in 1982, Tod began his career as a high school science and mathematics teacher with the Newell Providence School District. He also coached a variety of sports at the high school and junior high levels, developing a foundation in leadership, teamwork, and community service.
In May 1985, Tod transitioned to crop insurance, joining the Roland L. Geyer Agency. Throughout his career, he has remained committed to strengthening the crop insurance program and advocating for the needs of agricultural producers and independent agents. He has served on several national crop insurance boards and previously served as treasurer of the National Association of Crop Insurance Agents (NACIA), an organization dedicated to representing agents' interests in Washington, D.C.
One of the companies represented by the Roland L. Geyer agency asked Tod to be part of the testing team for its new crop insurance specific computer program. As part of this team, Tod tested beta versions of the program prior to release and offered improvements as viewed from an agency perspective.
Tod continues to support the industry through his membership in the Crop Insurance Professionals Association (CIPA). His extensive experience and longstanding involvement in crop insurance reflect a dedication to helping farmers navigate risk and protect their operations.

Phil Fanning
Phil has strong community ties and brings decades of experience to his role with the Roland L. Geyer Agency.
After graduating from high school, Phil attended Iowa Central Junior College in Fort Dodge before enlisting in the U.S. military at age 19. He spent much of his three years of service in Tokyo, Japan, and earned an associate degree in communications after returning home in 1970.
Phil spent the next 15 years farming alongside his father.
In 1980, Phil obtained his real estate license and began selling farmland in the local community. In 1984, he joined the Roland L. Geyer Agency, where he continues to serve clients as a crop insurance agent. His varied professional experience and deep agricultural roots give him a valuable perspective on the needs of farmers and the importance of protecting their operations.
