Roland L. Geyer began farming in Sac County in 1940. He and his wife, Dorothy Mae, first farmed near Odebolt then purchased a farm south of Early in 1950. Roland’s interests included not only raising crops but Spotted Poland China hogs, Guernsey dairy cows, and Palomino quarter horses.
While his farm enterprise kept him busy, Roland found time to work part-time for USDA/ASCS from 1954 to 1957. This sideline gave way to Roland becoming a federal crop insurance agent in 1958, one of only five in Iowa, and the beginning of The Roland L. Geyer Agency. Crop-hail insurance was added to the mix in the 1970s.
Of the five original Iowa crop insurance agents, three are still in business today. Only the Roland L. Geyer Agency is still owned by the same family with the same commitment to providing the expertise needed to help farmers protect their livelihoods.
Roland served as chairman of the Iowa Agents Association from 1975 to 1981. He was a charter member of the National Agent Association, organized in 1977 and was appointed treasurer of this association. In 1981, Roland helped organize the National Association of Crop Insurance Agents (NACIA). He also served as a past treasurer of the NACIA.
The Roland L. Geyer Agency specializes in crop insurance. Since its inception, the agency’s sole mission has been serving farmers with the right crop insurance coverage and providing outstanding customer service. Roland’s son, Tod, and friend, Phil Fanning, joined him as partners in the agency in 1985 and 1984 respectively.
Tod and Phil maintain the Agency’s tradition of outstanding service. They choose to offer only crop insurance products because it allows them to focus on the increasing complexity of the policies and their customers’ needs.
When crop insurance was new, there was one program with three different levels of coverage. Today, there are multiple plans, multiple levels of coverage, as well as livestock policies. The Roland L. Geyer Agency keeps up to date with continuing education and dedication to understanding the coverage that best suits farmers in this region.
With more than 50 years of service, friendship, and expertise as the foundation, the Roland L. Geyer Agency will continue to grow and thrive into the future for the next generations of farmers in northwest Iowa.

For 15 years, Phil continued to farm with his father on their century farm while pursuing his Certified Flight Instructor license. Phil gave lessons locally as well as flying private charters to Des Moines, St. Louis, Kansas City, and the surrounding areas.
Phil acquired his real estate license in 1980, working in the local community selling farmland until 1984 when he made the decision to join the Roland L. Geyer Agency, where he continues to work as an agent.
